Python going Mainstream - Mike - 5

Between Microsoft hiring Jim Hugunin to work on ironpython (www.ironpython.com) and dynamic languages for the CLR, more articles appearing in Dr. Dobb's Journal regarding the finer points of using Python and an increase in the number of job postings requiring Python, I'm pretty happy.

A few of you have listened to me prattle on about Python and are probably sick of it by now. Oh well, it's my damn site. I was just wondering if anybody else had noticed something similar, either with Python or with some other language or platform that you either use regularly or wish you used regularly.

Topic Ideas - Rich - 6

Not that I'm volunteering to write the topic, but I had some topic ideas. Thought other people might want to post things they wanted to hear about.

Here's mine:

- TDD (test driven development). Found this very useful. Even when maintaining. Especially when maintaining. Write tests for the stuff you are about to fix. Next time you'll appreciate them.

- Peer Review. I think you touched on this, but I was thinking it might be good to give some examples of when and how to do this. Very few people do a good job of reviewing other people's work. I really appreciate it when someone does do a good job. Usually it means they tore me a new one. I seem to recall a Mr. Surel tearing me up a few times.

- Hounding QA. Assuming you have a QA department (some of us aren't so lucky), how to get the most out of QA. Like setting up PDBs for all release kits, duplicating QA environments on developer machines, etc.

Sorry that's all I could think of right now.

Welcome - Mike the Janitor Programmer - 4

Hello and welcome to the Janitor Programmer's website. In this forum I'm hoping that we'll be able to discuss various facts of development and maintenance of software, good programming practices and just about anything else you feel like talking about. Sometimes you just need a place to go vent. Who knows, it may even turn into a fruitful discussion or debate.

I reserve the right to pull any posts that appear problematic, but I'm not planning on doing that. I've posted my share of inflammatory posts on various boards, so it would have to be pretty grievous to get pulled. There are only two basic rules. Be civil. Excessive use of foul language won't get your post pulled, but it will go a long way in making yuu sound stupid. And there probably is not a need to be overly insulting. Heated discussions happen. I've found that those I can get through often teach me something.

I've done some rudimentary testing with the boards and they do seem to be able to take and render Unicode correctly, so if I should be lucky enough to attract non-ASCII speaking folks, everything should work. If there is a problem, please let me know and I'll do what I can to rectify it. This is a simple PHP/mySQL combo, so if you do see an issue and can even offer a solution, I'm always willing to learn.

Other than the obligatory "all posts become the property of JanitorProgrammer.com", if there is anything you can think of that would make the boards better, just e-mail me at janitorprogr at janitorprogrammer dot com.

Enjoy
